So what is SETI@Home you ask. SETI@Home is a combined search for life on other plannets, done by having home and work comptuers scanning the radio scans of the sky for pattern. Basically what happens is this. You install the software, download a 300k chunk of data and let your computer chew on it for a while. It can take a while to do this if you have a slow comptuer. I've seen stats from 9 hours to 40 hours per 300k file downloaded. The faster your machine the faster it will run. The nice thing about SETI@Home software is that it runs in the back ground only. So it only runs when your now using your computer, so you shouldn't see much of a slow down after it's installed. If you do, call them not me.
