Windows 2000 Manual Walk Thru

  1. From the desktop open My Computer. It is no longer the first icon, it is now the second icon on the left hand side. The default icons are shown.

  2. Open the Control Pannel.

  3. Find and Open the Network and Dial Up Connections Control Pannel.

  4. Double click on Make a New Connection.

  5. From the first screen click Next.

  6. At the menu select the second option, Dial-up to the Internet, and click Next.

  7. At the next page select Connect using my phone line, and click Next.

  8. The Next page is the Phone number field. Enter the POP local to the user. As always warn the user to check with the phone company reguarding long distance charges. If the phone number is local and is dialed by only dialing 7 digits uncheck Dial using area code and country code. Click Advanced on the bottom right hand side.

  9. In the Connection Type Box make sure that PPP is selected. Also make sure that Disable LCP Extentions is checked. In the Login Procedure box None should be selected, unless you need to setup a post dial terminal, in which case you would select Log on manually. Then click on the Address tab.

  10. Under IP address it should be set to Internet service provider automatically provides one. Under DNS server address select B>Always use the following. Enter two DNS numbers in the Primary and Alternate DNS Server boxes. (Note: In Windows NT 5.0 (Windows 2000), unlike in Windows 95/98, you must enter the periods in teh DNS boxes.) Click OK. Then Click Next.

  11. For the username Earthlink members must enter ELN/username for the User name and thier password in the Password box. Once entered, click Next.

  12. For the Connection name it is recommended that you enter Earthlink. However the user can enter anything in this box. Click Next

  13. On the last screen click Finish

  14. The Windows 2000 version of the Connect To window should come up at this point. All the user should have to do is click Connect. If it does not come up, double click on the new Earthlink icon in the Network and Dial UP Connections Window.

  15. If the user want's a short cut to the connection on the desktop, simply right click on the connection in the Network and Dial Up Connections Windows and click on Create Shortcut. When the error message comes up click Yes. It will then create a icon on the users desktop.

  16. Done!
